2はじめに1996年8月のはじめ、松島町教育委員会の萩原課長が私を熊本空港に迎えに来てくれました。三角辺りを通り過ぎる頃、天草の島が目に入ってきた時のあの高揚をはっきり覚えています。その瞬間、ここに来るのは運命だと感じました。アメリカのモンタナ大学を卒業し、松島町の英語教師として３年間赴任した後、天草市本渡町に来てからもずっと英語教師として、ユーカリイングリッシュスクールに勤務しています。写真には元々興味を持っていましたが、年々思いを深めていくようになりました。写真を撮り始めた頃は誰からも批評されることはなかったので気軽な趣味として楽しんでいました。2001年に天草フォトクラブに入ってからは、メンバーと情報交換をしたり、写真についてお互い評価したりしながら、カメラマンとして大きくなったように思います。振り返ってみるとあの頃から本格的に写真に取り組み始めた気がします。もちろん、常に光と季節の具合を考えながら、目標を持って写真を撮りに出かけますが、一番いい写真は、目的の場所へ行く途中で偶然に出合ったり、帰りに出くわしたりすることも多くあります。目的の写真の方が全然駄目な時もあります。最近では、フォトクラブメンバーとの写真談義やフォトコンテストに出品することが楽しみです。それは、スポーツに似ています。でも一番は写真を楽しむことです。カメラ道具を入れたリュックを担いで単車に乗りながら、今日は何が撮れるかなぁと思いを巡らせます。この天草は山からの見晴らし、海の景色、のどかな田舎、パワースポット、祭り、豊かな暮らしがそこにあり、ここに住めて良かったと思います。約20年過ごして天草に少しは詳しくなりましたが、まだ発見していない所もいっぱいです。僕の天草行脚は写真と場所だけではなく、暮らしの中で出会った人々との交わりもあります。それは私の生徒、学校の同僚、フォトクラブのメンバー、天草の友達、旅先で出会った農家の人や漁師たちです。これからも天草をぶらぶらしながら、次の写真を探しに出かけます。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　2018年7月　Carl Jenson　On an early August day in 1996, my supervisor Mr.Hagiwara after picking me up at the airport was taking me to Amakusa for the rst time. Once we reached Misumi and Amakusa came into view I clearly remember the elation I felt. I knew then that I was in the right place. I had just arrived to work in Matsushima Town as an English teacher, having graduated from the University of Montana. After three years in Matsushima I moved to Hondo where I have been working at Eucalyptus English School ever since.My interest in photography was growing year by year. But I was very easy-going in those days, photographing what I wanted to with almost no input from anyone. That changed very quickly when I joined the Amakusa Photo Club in 2001. We critique each other's photos and share information which helps us grow together as photo enthusiasts. I look back at that as the time when I began photography in earnest. Certainly, I like shooting with a goal in mind. That usually means choosing lighting conditions that are interesting during a season that best compliments the scene. That being said, often the best photos are the ones taken on the way to my intended location or on the way back after getting the shot, or sometimes not getting the shot. I enjoy the friendly competition within the photo club as well as local photo contests. It makes photography feel like a sport, and that's OK too. But the most important thing is not to forget that the reason we are pursuing this hobby is for enjoyment. Going out on my motor scooter with my gear on my back in the hopes of nding something new, the same thought occurs to me: I'm so lucky to be living here in Amakusa with its abundance of mountain vistas, seascapes, idyllic countryside, power spots and festivals. It has become very familiar to me over nearly 20 years but there is still so much more to discover. My journey through Amakusa is more than just places and pictures, it's my connection with the people here. They are my students and colleagues, members of my photo club, friends in the community, or farmers and shermen I meet while out in search of undiscovered beauty in Amakusa.
